Knowledge in careers in medicine

Becoming a doctor in the UK is a long but rewarding journey, and being well versed in this before your interview can show your interviewer that you know whats ahead of you! It involves the following key stages:

• Undergraduate Medical Degree (5-6 years): Medical school combines preclinical study (theory) with clinical placements in hospitals and the community. Graduate entry programs (4 years) are available for those with prior degrees.
• Foundation Training (2 years): Newly qualified doctors rotate through various specialties to gain broad experience. Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) is granted after the first year (FY1).
• Specialty or GP Training (3-8+ years): Doctors choose either:
  • GP Training (3 years): Focused on primary care.
  • Specialty Training (5-8+ years): Pathways like surgery, medicine, or paediatrics.
• Consultant or GP Role: After completing training, GPs work in community settings, while consultants are senior specialists in hospitals.

Doctors also engage in lifelong learning through Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to maintain their GMC registration and stay current in their field.
