Brachycephalic dogs

Brachycephalic breeds (bulldogs, pugs, szih tzus) have issues due to their prominently flattened faces.

Welfare issues:

• BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome) – causes breathing difficulties

• Eye issues

• Infection of skin folds

• Overcrowded teeth

• High risk of surgery

• High risk of dystocia (puppies stuck during birth)

This raises lots of welfare and moral concerns:

• These animals are often bred for aesthetic purposes rather than health

• Owners normalise the difficulties

• The illegal puppy trade is driven by high demand

• Should the law prohibit these deformities?

Vet duties:

• Give owners honest and evidence-based advice

• Promote appropriate breeding (health tests)

• Avoid breeding animals that are impacted

• Encourage weight loss

Interviewers are looking for:

• Prioritising welfare

• Compassion

• Knowledge of moral breeding

• Clear communication
