Problem-Solving in Veterinary MMIs

Problem-solving is a core part of veterinary work, necessary for practically everything from figuring out what a pet is ill with to changing the treatment plan, managing emergencies, and, in general, getting rid of any unexpected hurdles. What the MMI examiners want to see is the way you think, rather than just your ability to solve problems. Exceptional answers show that you have planned your problem-solving, communicated well, and can keep your cool when things don't turn out as you anticipated.

How to Formulate an Answer to a Problem

1. Think of a Situation Where Something Went Off Track

Examples include:

• A project that stopped moving forward.
• A surprise event that changed a plan.
• Team members misunderstand each other.
• Lack of resources.
• An urgent matter.

2. Describe the Problem Analysis You Did

• Collecting data.
• Questioning.
• Trying to find the real cause of the problem rather than treating the symptoms.
• Finding out which needs were most important for the group or task.

3. Describe the Choices You Considered

Show your thinking:

• What were the alternatives?
• What led you to choose your final solution?

4. Explain What You Did and the Outcome

• Even if the outcome was not favourable, show your progress, reasoning, and adaptability.

5. Recall the Skills You Developed

• Decision making.
• Creativity.
• Communication.
• Keeping your cool.
• Evaluating results.
