Confidentiality relates to keeping patient information private and confidential, only disclosing when absolutely necessary. Not only do you want to define the term to the interviewer, but you also want to talk about why confidentiality is necessary for all healthcare professionals.
Some examples as to why confidentiality is important:
- Builds trust between patient and clinician
- Requirement by the GDC
- Ethical obligation
- Maintain a trustworthy reputation of dentists to the public
Also be aware of when you can breach confidentiality. This includes if the patient has consented, if required by the law, if there are clear risks of abuse etc.
You can also add a small anecdote of a personal experience where you had to maintain confidentiality, this shows the interviewer that you are honest and trustworthy.
Suggested structure for this answer:
- Define the term confidentiality- the protection of patient's personal information only to be used as intended, which can be breached under certain circumstances
- Explain why dentists must keep information confidential
- Mention when confidentiality can be breached and give examples
- Give an example of a time where you had to keep confidential information
