The Animal Welfare Act 2006 is the main legislation that protects animals within the UK from harm. The interviewer is not expecting you to know the act in full detail, they’re just expecting you to have an understanding that it helps to prevent unnecessary suffering to animals.

Legal Responsibilities

Owners have a legal responsibility to meet their animals' needs, which are the 5 welfare needs that are based on the 5 freedoms. Failing to meet the animal's needs is illegal and causes unnecessary suffering to the animal.

The Vet's Role

Promoting welfare is of utmost importance, and it is a vet's duty to spread awareness and understand the act so they can see when an animal's needs are not being met to the correct standard.

How Can We Use the Act?

• Better husbandry: Providing the correct nutrition, clean and appropriate housing, reducing stress, enrichment, etc.
• Education and communication: Advising owners and helping them understand their animals' needs, explaining the impact of inappropriate care and promoting the correct medication.
• Low stress handling: Gentle restraining, allowing animals time and understanding behavioural cues.
• Disease prevention and pain: Vaccinate, control parasites, and prompt treatment.
• System level Support responsible breeding, promote biosecurity, improve housing and encourage positive welfare.
