Patient safety is the aspect that is most frequently brought up in SJTs since the question is about animals which cannot speak.

Safety depends on good communication, following the protocols, and being willing to point out possible mistakes. The interviewers expect to hear that you realise how minor negligence, wrong dose, unclear instructions, and missing monitoring could lead to severe consequences.

Key Principles

• Be on the lookout for the signs of danger both in the clinical area (e.g. a drug wrongly prepared) and behaviourally (e.g. a scared dog about to snap).
• Share your concerns respectfully and calmly, even if you hold a lower position than colleagues and are not fully confident.
• Be aware of the importance of checklists, double checks, and unbroken systems.
• Realise how letting down the team in terms of communication can be a cause of injury.
