Inherited diseases: Some breeds are prone to conditions like hip dysplasia, cardiac problems, and eye disorders.

Extremes: Brachycephalic breeds are more prone to having breathing issues, eyesight problems, and overheating.

Owner pressure: Owners may decide to breed animals that shouldn't be bred due to temperament or health issues.

Vet Duties

• Put animal welfare ahead of owner desires.
• Inform owners of the dangers reproducing such animals poses to their health.
• Promote responsible mate selection, screening programs, and health testing.
• When necessary, report or oppose unethical breeding methods.
• Encourage breeding for health and utility.

How to Discuss in an MMI

• Highlighting welfare and evidence-based guidance: “My responsibility is to ensure breeding decisions support long-term health.”
• Recognise client correspondence: “I would work with the owner to find ethical alternatives and clearly explain the risks.”
• Show awareness of wider implications: “Breeding decisions affect future generations and the wider population.”
