Confidentiality in Veterinary Medicine
Confidentiality is a core professional duty in veterinary medicine. It means that the client's information cannot be shared without their permission. MMIs can test how much you understand confidentiality and when this rule can be broken.
What It Means
• Vets must protect client information
• Information should only be shared with the owner and other professionals
When Can It Be Broken
• When animal welfare is at risk (e.g. abuse or neglect)
• Public health is threatened
• Notifiable diseases
MMI Points
• Show understanding that confidentiality helps to build trust in vets
• Discuss concerns with the owner first if it is safe to do so
• Outline that you would follow all guidelines and ask for advice from other professionals if needed
