Harassment in the Veterinary Field

Unfortunately, vets may occasionally be harassed in the veterinary field, whether this is in the form of bullying, inappropriate behaviour or unsafe acts. It may happen within the team or from a client. It is important that you know how to handle harassment.

Why Is It Important to Know About Harassment

• Disagreements can get out of hand quickly in a small team
• Harassment may compromise communication and trust
• Vets are expected to be professional

How Should Vets React

• If it's possible and safe, they should deal with the behaviour as soon as possible
• Inform a senior colleague
• Keep records of what has happened
• Encourage any coworkers who have been affected to get help
• Encourage a respectful environment

• Safety always comes first, so make sure it is prioritised
• Sensitively address concerns if possible
• Note that animal care is compromised by harassment
• Be aware of policies like practice policies, HR procedures and safeguarding expectations
